How I Work

Most people don't come to therapy because they're curious about themselves. They come because something in their life keeps unfolding in familiar ways.

The same argument. The same anxiety. The same relationship. The same feeling that, despite their best efforts, nothing seems to change.

Over time, these patterns become so familiar that they begin to feel like part of who we are. One of the first goals of therapy is to make those patterns visible. Once we can see them more clearly, we are no longer completely governed by them.

I tend to be active, engaged, straightforward, and, at times, challenging. I won't simply listen while familiar ways of thinking or relating repeat themselves. We'll slow them down, examine them carefully, and decide whether they're still serving the life you're trying to build.

The goal isn't endless analysis. It's greater clarity, more intentional choices, and the opportunity to move your life in a different direction.

Eventually, the question becomes whether the familiar is still worth the cost.

How I Understand People

Over the years, I've come to believe that people rarely struggle because they lack intelligence, insight, or motivation. More often, they're living within ways of thinking and relating that have become so familiar they no longer question them.

My understanding has been shaped by more than 35 years of working with individuals, couples, and families, as well as by marriage, raising a blended family, my deep Latino roots, and my own experience with pancreatic cancer. Each has reinforced the same lesson: people are far more complex—and far more resilient—than they first appear.

I've also learned that lasting change rarely begins with having the right answer. It begins with observing your life more clearly, with enough honesty and curiosity to question what has become familiar and consider a different way forward.

Some lessons can be learned from books. Others have to be lived.
